Me
I grew up in Canada but currently reside in Osaka, Japan,
where I do photography in my free time. As Robert Capa once said,
Japan is a paradise for photographers. It really is. There is so
much to see, let alone photograph!
My primary interests are in travel
photography and social documentary. This website concentrates on
the fomer, because I'd rather not show photographs of
people on such a public medium as the Internet.
Experience
I have been photographing since I was in high school. (Many kind
thanks to my first photography teacher, Mr. Mathews of Harry Ainlay
School, Edmonton). I also photographed extensively during my days
at Ryerson Polytechnic (Toronto) and Dalhousie (Halifax). Apart
from Japan, I have lived in Korea, and my best travel experiences
include Spain, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand. Since the
late 80s and until recently I shot solely on a Nikon F3HP, in
black and white, but a busy schedule eventually prevented me
from having the time to do all that archival printing.
The New Photography
The digital medium allows me some more freedom
(and no darkroom time), but it isn't the same. It's a whole new
world, with drawbacks and challenges, as well many -- dare I say
it -- convenient post-production
possibilities. But the result of my foray into digital photography
is this site.
This Site
There are three categories of photographs: Japan, World and Themes.
Japan and World are sub-divided into galleries
representing the cities in which the photos were taken, while Themes includes
photos from a variety of places but sharing the same subject. The
majority of the photographs here are about Japan, because this
is where I live and work. I look forward to traveling around some
more, to add to the non-Japan photographs here.
Acknowledgements
The image viewer I use for each gallery is a
flash-based program called Simpleviewer that is particularly useful
for Mac users, from Airtightinteractive.com.
I also use the excellent iPhoto Export by Luke
Burton. Both are
not only free, but well-designed and easy-to-use. I
designed this site with Dreamweaver 8 on a Powerbook G4. I also
have a DJ
site and
a blog.
The Goods
As for equipment, everything pre-Sept '06 was shot on
a Canon G3 digicam. Anything dated Sept. '06 and after was shot
on a Nikon D80 and 18-200mm VR lens. Perhaps at a later date I
will add some galleries from the F3HP days...
I hope
you enjoy the site. I welcome any comments, so please
me!
